WHERE WE WORK
LIBERIA, WEST AFRICA
Liberia, officially the Republic of Liberia, is a country in West Africa bordered by Sierra Leone to its west, Guinea to its north and Ivory Coast to its east. It covers an area of 111,369 square kilometres and is home to about 4 million people.
River Gee is a county in the southern portion of the West African nation of Liberia. One of 15 counties that comprise the first-level of administrative division in the nation, it has six districts. The of the largest city in River Gee county is Kanweakan city.
Kanweakan is one of the most deprived and needy rural cities in Liberia, where nearly 50% of women give birth with an unskilled attendant in a non-clinical setting and only 12% have access to modern contraceptive, there is a high percentage of child mortality rate, lack of medical services, malaria, high blood pressure, stroke, and HIV/Aids.
The medical needs of these people are overwhelming because they are not receiving aid to re-establish themselves after the civil war. This is mainly because the roads to the region are largely inaccessible and the decentralization of basic healthcare has not reached them. About 92% of the county's inhabitants derive the majority of their income from agricultural production.
